Part 1: The mobile sync

This is the first part of a little series of articles with a closer look at the core features of Sorting Thoughts. This article is about the mobile synchronization feature for HP webOS and Android devices.

If you use the mobile version of Sorting Thoughts (available for HP webOS and Android devices), you can sync your thoughts with the desktop version in three simple steps. Thats makes it pretty easy to keep important thoughts in your pocket or to sync back sudden inspirations in your desktop thought collection. Moreover, you can use the sync to backup all mobile thoughts.

I think the sync feature is one of the greatest features of Sorting Thoughts. Let’s take a closer look on it:

Sync your thoughts in three steps

Step 1: Connect your device by USB

In the first step you must connect your handset with your desktop PC by USB cable. Your handset must be in the USB drive mode. If you have problems to do this, please consult the user manual of your handset.

Step 2: Enable the sync

To enable the sync, open the preferences of the desktop version and enable the mobile sync option. In the sync preference view you can also see information about the last successful sync (last device path and sync date).

Step 3: Start the sync

Now you are ready to start the sync. Click on the “Start sync” button in the preference view or in the menu bar. If you start the sync for the first time, Sorting Thoughts must find the mobile thought collection and you will see a dialog box with the following request: “Please select a folder on the USB drive of your handset.” After the selection of any folder on the USB drive, Sorting Thoughts will find the mobile thought collection automatically.
Sorting Thoughts analyzed all entries which are relevant for the sync. After the sync all mobile thoughts are visible in the thought tree and in an extra “Mobile Thoughts” shelf.

Good to know

  • If you have activated a password lock on your mobile app, you must enter this password in the synchronisation process.
  • You can only sync one device with the desktop app. If you want sync a 2nd device the pairing between the first device and the desktop app must be reseted.
  • In some cases, it is possible that the sync detects conflicts. You can use a compare dialog if changes on a desktop and mobile thought are detected. To open this dialog, double-click on the thought in the conflict resolve dialog.
  • If you want to add a thought to your mobile thought collection, you must use the “Mobile Sync…” action in the context menu of the relevant thought.
  • At the moment, the sync supports only simple thoughts – no projects, tasks or events.
  • If the mobile app still running after the sync, you must restart the app.

Also for the numerous reviews and constructive suggestions (see here). One of the most requested features is the color marker feature. I think the next release of Sorting Thoughts for webOS includes this useful feature.

Another suggestions and critiques are always welcome. In addition, it is possible to vote for new features in the UserVoice forum of Sorting Thoughts (the red button on the left side). This is very useful for me to prioritize new feature.
